The church of Christ is a nondenominational brotherhood of
Christians that plead for the unity of believers in matters of faith and
conduct based on Biblical evidences. We contend for a strict adherence to
the New Testament pattern of worship and church organization, retaining
such practices as acapella singing, weekly observances of the Lord's
Supper, reading and teaching from the Scriptures and inclusion of
baptized believers into membership of the Church. Without any centralized
governing body or board, congregations often start with small and humble
beginnings.
The meeting of the Piedmont Church of Christ began with two
families who were worshiping separately in Lynchburg and Richmond. The
Lord brought them together to help establish the church here in
Farmville. The first official service was held in the VFW Hall on April
15, 1990. Members from churches in Virginia, i.e., Richmond, Colonial
Heights, and Lynchburg assisted with the teaching and preaching in the
early years. With additional financial assistance from churches in New
Johnsonville and Centerville, Tennessee, we were able to hire a full time
pulpit minister. Alan Thomas came and preached for one year. He was
succeeded by Lowell White who preached for three years before returning
to the mission field in Nigeria. Jerry Sawyer has been the full time minister since September 1998. With the help of churches in Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama, the church here was able to purchase land and raise enough capital to build a new place of worship The new building was completed in April of 1998. The Christians continue to meet there regularly and faithfully.
